Cell phones are everywhere you look. Just walk through a crowded mall or look around a restaurant and you will see people talking, texting and taking pictures with their cell phones. With so many features available today, it’s hard to know which cell phone is right for you. When you decide to buy a new cell phone, there are five important features that you just can’t live without.

The first feature is a camera. Camera phones emerged more than ten years ago, and today almost all cell phones include a camera feature of some sort. Not every camera is created equally though, so if you want to take really high quality pictures, you need to know the difference. Cell phone cameras are available in VGA and digital models. You can get camera phones that take high quality pictures at excellent resolutions. Many phones also take video that can be quickly uploaded to the internet. You never have to miss the opportunity to capture a precious memory again. With the help of camera features on your cell phone, you will be ready to take a picture at a moment’s notice.

The second important feature is music. Today’s cell phones include MP3 capabilities. You can download all of your favorite songs directly to your phone or even listen to the radio. For uninterrupted access to all your favorite music, make sure you choose a phone with features in this category.

Third, you should look for a phone with business capabilities at places like SearchMobile. Smart phones have everything you need to keep your company up and running, even when you are on vacation, or stuck in traffic for hours. Business features includes calendars, appointment schedulers, email capability and the ability to open and edit documents and spreadsheets. All of these features are readily available in the newest smart phones.
Fourth, you should look for special connectivity features. Bluetooth capabilities are increasingly important for cell phone users. When you have the Bluetooth function on your phone, you can exchange files with any other mobile phone with the same capabilities within a ten mile radius.

Finally, don’t forget to look for a phone with a great appearance. While appearance might be the last thing on your list, don’t forget to take it into consideration. Do you want a flip phone or one that slides? Perhaps you want a palm sized smart phone. What color do you prefer? Most phones come in a variety of colors. Do you want a phone that is small and discreet, or sleek and stylish?

When you shop for a cell phone, don’t settle for less than everything you want. With so many features available to you, the sky is the limit. Use the internet to browse the dozens of phones available to find one that is right for you. Consider buying a phone from an online retailer to save time and money. Make sure you buy all the accessories you will need as well. You will definitely need a battery charger for your home and your car, as well as a headset if you plan to talk while driving. Look for these features to find the best phone for you.

FTA Receivers

In this digital day and age, it is important to know the different types of devices that are upcoming and most effective. Some of these devices include wireless hard drives, wireless laptops and various other wireless devices. After doing research and finding the best options for you as a consumer, most people will find they don’t like using plug in devices and would rather install wireless devices that will better suit their needs.

Devices like the wireless hard drive will allow the users to access several different other wireless devices at one time. Despite the popularity behind these devices, wireless hard drives have been lacking in the department of sales. The main reason for this is due to the accessibility of the drives. It is sometimes hard to find hard drives over a wireless router and external hard drives. Many consumers use a router purchased from a company or use their USB ports along with the disk drive.

There are reasons for consumers to create their own wireless network and hub. You can have many devices accessible at any time while relocating files to other computers or devices is very easy. This will still give you access to your own files whenever you need them without having to worry about the space left in your own internal hard drive. This will also be more hassle free while dealing with unpacking the external hard drives and putting the new necessary components on to your system. The wireless hard drive is viewed by many to be the “new wave” of the upcoming technological world.

Once you have decided on which wireless hard drive to install into your system, you can follow simple steps in actually setting up your computers. You will need to decide which products to use and those that will be required to be compatible to your own home network. You will also need to check with the network on the devices that you will be using. You, as the consumer, will also need to select the connection, router, or hard drive, and an adapter for each component that will be a part of the network. In order to make sure you get the best wireless device, you will need to make sure that your computer or device doesn’t already have a wireless device already attached to it. Also, you will need to make sure you purchase all of your wireless devices from the same manufacturer or vendor to allow for easier and quicker set up.

The popularity of wireless laptops has increased throughout the years due to the portability and accessibility of the laptop, and the ease of use at just about anywhere the consumer needs to be. The laptop will allow the needs of the technology community to grow and keep their members in touch by giving the consumers many different options for communication. There is a huge variety of different shapes and sizes with a huge amount of features that will fit their needs. Some of the extra options on wireless laptops are well-sought after and are current fads for current consumers that travel. These consumers will want to get the smallest devices while still being able to fulfill their needs while away from the home or office.

The very first European presence in the Alabama Watershed Basin was by the Spanish conquistador, Hernando De Soto, who traversed the state in 1540.

Fort Toulouse

Fort Toulouse was the first permanent settlement by Europeans in the interior of what would become the state of Alabama.

In 1717, French forces in Mobile, fearing the growing influence of British traders throughout the region, decided to build a fort at what they believed was the most strategic location for controlling and influencing trade and settlement in this portion of the New World.

Fort Toulouse would become the first European settlement in the Alabama Valley.

Fort Toulouse was located on a peninsula formed by the confluence of the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers in Elmore County near Montgomery. Registered as a National Historic Landmark, the site was settled by prehistoric Indians who at one time built five ceremonial mounds there on the left bank of the Coosa River.

The Creek Indian War and the Fort Mims Massacre

The Creek War between 1813-1814 could have easily been called the War for the Alabama, because what was at stake for both the Creek Indians and frontiersmen was the occupation of the lands drained by the Alabama and its tributaries. (Jackson)
It was during this conflict that frontiersmen built their own strategic forts, fearing Indian attack and being unable to rely on US troops to protect them. The most famous of these was Fort Mims. Fort Mims was considered the strongest fort in the territory and was located near the curve of the Alabama along the northwest edge of present-day Baldwin County. The Fort was actually the fortified home of Samuel Mims and sat on high ground on the east bank of Tensaw Lake, an oxbow lake formed from an old channel of the Alabama River and connected to the river by a navigable passage.

On August 30, 1813, Fort Mims was attacked by a band of Red Stick Creeks led by an Indian half-breed, William Weatherford, known as Chief Red Eagle. The ensuing battle is considered the bloodiest massacre by Indians in American History. Although the exact death toll is unknown it is believed that between 250 and 400 settlers and militiamen were slaughtered and burned, including women and children. Apparently most of the slaves within the fort were spared so that they might serve the Creek Nation.

The military captain of the Fort, Major Daniel Beasley demonstrated perhaps the saddest case of military incompetence in the history of the state. Ignoring repeated sightings of hostile Creeks approaching the Fort, Major Beasley was one of the first casualties, being clubbed to death as he attempted to close the open gates.

Though the Creeks might have won a few squirmishes here and there, the war would belong to the Americans who wanted their land. The most decisive defeat of the Creeks occurred at Horseshoe Bend on the Tallapoosa River under the lead of Andrew Jackson (see Tallapoosa summary for full story). Shortly after this defeat at Horseshoe Bend, the Creek leader, Chief Red Eagle surrendered to Andrew Jackson at Fort Toulouse, rechristened Fort Jackson.

Cotton and River Commerce

As settlement of the Alabama Basin began in earnest, the fertile valleys of these river basins set the stage for Alabama’s economic boom. Cotton was the lifeblood of early Alabama and the Alabama River was its major artery. Originally goods primarily traveled in one direction, downstream. But with the arrival of the steamboat in 1821, commerce flourished upstream and down. Virtually all of Alabama’s major towns were located along rivers. A constant bustle of floating logs, and steamboats loaded with both cotton and passengers made the river a part of everyday life.

At the height of the steamboat era, there were more than 200 landings along the Alabama River. The landings served as social centers and places to load cotton, fat pine fuel, and river travelers. Historians often refer to this period as the Golden Age of Alabama, and to recreational steamboats as “Floating Palaces.” This era ended with the proliferation of railroads a decade after the Civil War and life along the rivers has never returned to its former splendor.

Room Acoustic Treatments

If you’ve ever walked through a new apartment or house that has not yet been furnished and has no carpets, then you’ve heard a clear example of how a room can affect the quality of the sounds within it. Empty rooms with hard floors are highly reverberant, sending noticeable echoes bouncing all around the room. Sounds can seem amplified or distorted in these kinds of areas.

Later, when furniture and window treatments are added to the room, the acoustics are dramatically different. The echoes are not nearly as pronounced, and sounds within the room, especially those in the upper half of the audible acoustic spectrum, are more muted by far than they were in the same room when it was unfurnished. The room may also be quieter as the softer surfaces of the furniture and rugs or carpets tend to absorb sound waves rather than reflect them back into the room.

We are much more accustomed to the sound of a furnished room than we are to the way a completely unfurnished room sounds so empty rooms sound quite noticeably odd to us. Just because a room is furnished, however, doesn’t mean that you are getting the best possible acoustic performance from your home theater or home stereo system. Music and theater effects cover a much broader range of audio frequencies than the spoken voice and the ordinary sounds we might make while walking through the home.

Higher frequencies help provide us with the sense of direction to orient upon the source of the sound. In today’s surround sound home theater systems, movies are recorded with these spatial effects in mind to help make the sounds seem to originate in locations corresponding to the visual information presented on the screen. Off-screen sounds may occur to the sides or even behind us, while on screen action may be accompanied by sounds that pan across the screen in accordance with speeding vehicles or other moving objects.

If, however, there are echoes in the room caused by hard, flat surfaces like walls or glass windows, then the echoes can interfere with not only the intended directionality of the sounds, but also with the clarity of the speech, music, and special effects. For windows, curtains may be used as acoustic treatments. Heavier draped material tends to work better. For walls, acoustic treatment panels can be used. These panels are specially designed to damp sound waves and greatly reduce or eliminate audible echoes within the room. They are often upholstered and can be purchased in colors and patterns that complement the room’s décor.

For most rooms in the home, the normal acoustics of a furnished room are perfectly adequate. In rooms dedicated to home theaters or in which the home-owners expect to listen to music on a regular basis, acoustic room treatments may be needed to get the most out of their electronic gear.

Every year millions of Americans make one or more New Year’s resolutions. A New Year’s resolution is a kind of personal promise to change something about one’s life for the better. It could be losing weight, achieving a career goal, or eliminating some bad habit. It’s all about personal improvement. Often, people resolve to do something that is unpleasant or difficult. They pledge to cut out high calorie foods, work overtime to get ahead, stop spending money on unnecessary (but fun) things, and so on. Within a month of the New Year’s start, most of them have failed and are back to their old ways.

There is one easy New Year’s resolution that can be adopted in order to improve your health, the quality of job performance, and even your mood and social life. Unlike most of the other New Year’s resolutions that people try and quickly discard, this one’s easy. To improve all of these areas of one’s life, the only resolution one needs to make is to make sure they get at least 7-8 hours of quality sleep every night.

A full night’s sleep, according to a number of studies, can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus and concentrate on difficult tasks. Being better able to focus on the daily issues that one faces on the job is going to pay dividends when it’s time for one’s annual merit raise review. Additionally, getting a full night’s sleep reduces irritability and mood swings. That’s also going to improve your stock at the office.

Not only will a more easy-going and steady demeanor make you more pleasant to be around at work, but it can help in social situations as well. A better relationship with one’s family and friends could be one of the benefits of adopting the simple New Year’s resolution of getting enough sleep, if you are currently getting less than six hours of sleep each night.

For some, making and keeping this resolution might be as simple as buying a new memory foam mattress. An old uncomfortable mattress may be one thing that is currently preventing a full night’s sleep. Old mattresses tend to sag in the middle, resulting in improper spinal alignment that can not only interfere with a restful sleep, but can also be a cause of chronic back pain.

Memory foam mattresses also reshape themselves to conform to the contours of the body to reduce pressure points that can occur with conventional mattresses to the areas where most of one’s body weight lies: the shoulders, the hips and knees. A memory foam mattress, instead spreads its support out over the entire surface of the body to allow a restful night’s sleep without all the tossing and turning trying to find a comfortable position.

This year, instead of making a New Year’s resolution that you probably can’t keep, make one that is not only easy to keep, but which can help make dramatic improvements in a number of areas of your life.

Computer users are always looking for some form of memory to save and transport documents, photographs, programs, and other types of data files. Luckily, they have many to choose from. Memory comes in several different forms. Some memory is “volatile,” meaning it can be written over and reused. Some memory is “permanent,” meaning that once the data is recorded, it cannot be removed or recorded over. Memory comes in different sizes with different levels of portability.

CDs and DVDs are two forms of permanent memory. Some versions are semi-permanent, meaning that the data can be written over, but usually when something goes on a CD or DVD it is there to stay. These disks always come in the same size, with CDs holding 700 MB of data and DVDs holding 4.7 MB of data. CDs are usually used to hold music files, as they can be played in compact disk players. DVDs are usually used to hold movies in digital format, as they can be played in DVD players. Both CDs and DVDs can be used to store and transport other file types, such as documents, pictures, or programs. They can also be stored almost indefinitely to protect important data.

USB thumb drives have taken over the portable memory world. For a low price, you can purchase drives that hold anywhere from one to 32 GB of data. These drives are extremely portable, often coming with a keychain connector or lanyard to wear around your neck. The thumb drives can be plugged easily into any standard USB port and will usually “plug and play” without any action from the user. These drives are so prevalent that they are often given away as marketing gimmicks at tradeshows and business functions.

Zip drives were created prior to the explosion of USB thumb drives. Zip drives require a special drive to accommodate the disk. Zip disks come in 100 MB, 250 MB and 750 MB sizes. The disks are portable and can be written over, but are expensive and only work in computers with Zip drives.

External hard drives are becoming an inexpensive source of secure, portable memory. External hard drives are identical to the internal hard drive found in any computer, but are not seated in the case. These hard drives usually plug in through a USB port and require a secondary power source to turn on. The drives range from 100 GB to 1 TB, with many steps in between. These drives are secure and stable, usually able to handle a more rugged environment than the USB thumb drives. These drives can handle a lot of data in any format, and are great for storing sensitive files that must be kept.

The world of computer memory is constantly evolving. USB thumb drives and external hard drives will likely continue to increase in memory capacity before they become obsolete formats. CDs will likely be used less and less. Blu-Ray DVD format will take over the standard DVD format, allowing you to store even more data on a recordable DVD.

The first visit I ever made to a zoo was when I was six years old, at the Assinaboine Zoo in Winnipeg, Canada. I was captivated by the variety of animals there, and especially that the creatures I read about in books and saw in pictures had real form and substance and were alive. I was enchanted by the idea that I lived on a planet that was home to such wondrous things.

I don’t like going to the zoo anymore. I have an adult sensitivity to the fact that these creatures are captive, and feel sympathetic to them in that wise, but what really distresses me is the tight knot of anxiety I feel when I read or hear via unrelenting loudspeaker the statistics of loss of habitat, extinction of species and global climate change caused by destruction of the great rain forests that straddle the equator.

Who is trying to make this my problem?

The dire predictions have been bothersome enough to prompt my own research via the internet. I lack the discretionary income necessary to fire down to the Amazon jungle for a look-see of my own, so have to rely on the work of others. It is not comforting to know that an unspecified number of species are being wiped out (not just animal mind you, but human tribes – the very custodians of the primeval world) in order to grow acres and acres of soybeans and corn and coffee to sell on world markets (i.e. to industrialized nations such as this one). How boring.

How wasteful to raze the home of elegant creatures like South American panthers and jaguars and kinkajous and woolly monkeys, and macaws and anacondas, and sloths for heaven sakes so we can avoid the consequences of lactose intolerance by drinking soy milk in abundance.

I did discover that the statistics I have been regaled with at the zoo do not quite match the data I found at reliable websites such as that of The World Wildlife Federation. I have been exposed to some hyperbole, and wish to protest the extortion of funds and dampening of high spirits during trips to the zoo by being fed inflated generalized data. Apparently, many species, although reduced in numbers are managing to hang in there and keep some sort of toehold on the planet. I have a dim recall that certain developed countries may not exactly have clean hands regarding their own native animal populations, and that deforestation is not exactly a new idea germane only to activities in developing nations such as those in the Amazon basin.

I am also of the mind that if a country wishes to lay waste to its environment, it is entirely their business. It would be impolite to interfere just as I would refrain from commenting critically on the housekeeping standards of my neighbors. The clinker in that argument of course is that this little mud-ball we live on is in fact a closed biosphere and deforestation in Brazil does in fact affect the air we all breathe.

What to do, what to do?

Sometimes I think we have created a sort of Rube Goldberg machine that sucks in all the natural beauty of this planet and sends it whirring and gurgling and churning through a fitful, badly-constructed concatenation of pipes and hoses and conveyor belts to finally, exhaustedly, spit out a neat handful of dollars.

I don’t happen to think that the populations of developing countries that band the equator are inured to the beauties of the countries they live in. I think they are hungry, and would like to have all the things that Americans and the populations of other developed nations take for granted. I also do not believe that the people who do the physical work of clear cutting the forests and growing the beans and corn really experience much in the way of an improved standard of living as a result of their actions. Perhaps they feel this must be done in order to live at all.

Perhaps the best thing I can do is reassess the habits which govern my own lifestyle and take a look at how my consumption leads to deforestation, and change accordingly. It’s a start.

For ages, scales have been used to determine the value of things to allow merchants to price their goods in a way that seemed fair to their customers. If a thing was worth a great deal of money, it was said to be worth its weight in gold. Many different types of scales are still used in everyday commerce. Just visit the grocery store and try to spot all the scales in use there. These days, however, scales also play a large part in medical care and health maintenance.

Medical scales are among the first device the doctor uses to help ascertain our health status when we go in for a check-up. The doctor will compare our weight against normal healthy weights for our heights, and even against the records of our own weight on previous visits to see if we have changed or have developed a trend of weight gain or loss over the course of time. Obesity is a strong risk factor for many different serious health conditions including both cancer and heart disease, so it is only fitting that the doctor should help us monitor our weights and let us know if we should undertake a weight loss program.

As we grow older, our activity levels tend to be reduced. We don’t go out and play football or race against our friends as we did when we were younger. Some of us may still engage in exercise like golf or hiking, but even that level of physical activity is lower than that of our youth. As a result, we burn off fewer calories and have a tendency to slowly gain weight over time. As the years mount, a few pounds here and there gets repeated over and over again until we step on the floor scales and find that we have gained thirty or forty pounds.

If we do notice a trend of weight gain, the best time to try to correct it is before it has gone too far. Keeping weight off in the first place is far easier than losing weight and then trying to keep it off. Stepping on the floor scales every week, or even every month and charting any changes to make trends easier to spot can let us know when it’s time to skip that morning bagel during our coffee break and whether we need to consider heading to the gym on a regular basis.

One of the biggest things that we can do to help ourselves grow old in good health is to keep our weight under control. Stepping on the scales and keeping track of weight gains over time is a simple first step to identifying and preventing weight problems that can so greatly impact our health as we age.

Locate Missing Persons

In this day and age, divorce is unfortunately very commonplace. In fact, some estimate that over half of all marriages will end in divorce. Sadly, many divorces also involve deciding who will get custody of the child or children produced in that marriage. Child custody cases can be very complicated and often times may get very unfriendly. Almost everyone knows someone who has gone through a difficult child custody ordeal.

If you have found yourself in this unfortunate situation, there are some things you can do to prepare yourself for the long road ahead. Be realistic, this will be a difficult time for you, your family, and your friends. But, with a little information and planning a child custody case does not necessarily have to turn into a child custody battle. The following are a few tips for you to prepare for a child custody hearing.

Approach the child custody hearing with an open mind. As I already stated, not all child custody cases need to turn into a child custody battle, as they are commonly referred to these days. Keep an open mind and be hopeful that an amicable child custody solution can be worked out between you and the other parent without a significant struggle or fight. Also, do not be rigid in your plans. If you are only willing to accept the child custody plan you have in mind, with no compromises or sacrifices, you are only setting yourself up for disappointment. Being stubborn about your requests is only going to put the other parent on the defense and make him or her that much more unwilling to work things out with you.

Focus on the child’s or children’s needs. When trying to come up with a child custody plan, put yourself aside for the moment and focus on what is best for your child or children. What brought you and your partner to split up may have been something that hurt you deeply, but this is not the time or the place to get revenge or attempt to get even. You may think you can get him or her back for whatever was done to you by attempting to take all or most of the custody of your children. But once time passes and wounds heal, you will regret using your child or children as pawns.

If appropriate, consider hiring a private investigator. Unfortunately there are circumstances in which parents are not behaving suitably or even more sadly, behaving in neglectful or abusive ways when it comes to the children. A private investigator can look into accusations of neglect and abuse and provide evidence of either infraction if they do in fact exist. Hopefully, you will never find yourself in a situation where your partner is either abusing or neglecting your child or children, but if you do a private investigator can prove to be invaluable in this situation.

Practically everyone has seen those reflective, silver special occasion balloons that children and adults alike seem to go crazy for. I am not talking about the boring matte latex balloons of yesteryear, but rather the fancy helium filled delights that seem to flank every birthday celebration and Valentines day gift. But what are those lovely balloons made out of and where did this material come from? The new fangled balloons of today are made of Mylar and following is a brief history of this amazing substance.

Mylar is an astonishingly strong polyester film that was created in the early 1950s by a company by the name of DuPont. During the 1960s cellophane gave way steadily to Mylar because of Mylar’s superior strength and durability, resistance to heat, and excellent insulating properties. The unique qualities of Mylar made new markets for consumers possible in magnetic video and audio tape, capacitor dielectrics, packaging and batteries. In the 1960’s, NASA launched it’s Echo satellites, which were one hundred foot diameter balloons that were made of metallic Mylar film that was approximately five thousandths of an inch thick. NASA’s use of Mylar was a great boon for DuPont’s business. By the 1970s, Mylar had become DuPont’s best-selling film. Mylar is now a product of a joint venture, DuPont Teijin Films.

To manufacture Mylar, a very thin sheet of extremely hot PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is placed on a roll. This extremely hot polyethylene terephthalate is then stretched very thin in all directions. One side of the Mylar is typically extremely smooth, while the other side has a microscopically rough quality which encourages all different types of coatings and print media to attach to the Mylar.

To create a form of Mylar that is much less permeable by gasses and highly reflective to light, Mylar may be aluminized. Mylar is aluminized by adding a thin film of metal to it’s surface during the manufacturing process. Aluminized Mylar has a shiny reflective side and a dull side, much like aluminum foil. However, in contrast to aluminum foil and tin foil, Mylar does not tear easily.

Mylar has many uses today, some may be unexpected. A few uses for Mylar include:

Performance sails for sailboats, solar sails as an alternative means of propulsion for spacecrafts, an electrical insulating material, a base material for audio and video tape, insulation for dwellings in a cold environment. Mylar emergency blankets are used to reflect a shock victim’s body heat back to the patient. Mylar solar curtains reflect sunlight and heat away from windows, and Mylar may also be used to direct sunlight or artificial light to indoor plants. Mylar in NASA’s spacesuits make them radiation resistant and keep astronauts warm. Mylar can be used as a protective covering over buttons, pins, and badges, Mylar can be used as the glossy top layer of a Polaroid print, Mylar may also be used as a material in kites. If you have a use for Mylar, it is readily available from online retailers. It may be purchased as Double Matte / Mylar Film rolls from various online resources.
