In this day and age, divorce is unfortunately very commonplace. In fact, some estimate that over half of all marriages will end in divorce. Sadly, many divorces also involve deciding who will get custody of the child or children produced in that marriage. Child custody cases can be very complicated and often times may get very unfriendly. Almost everyone knows someone who has gone through a difficult child custody ordeal.
If you have found yourself in this unfortunate situation, there are some things you can do to prepare yourself for the long road ahead. Be realistic, this will be a difficult time for you, your family, and your friends. But, with a little information and planning a child custody case does not necessarily have to turn into a child custody battle. The following are a few tips for you to prepare for a child custody hearing.
Approach the child custody hearing with an open mind. As I already stated, not all child custody cases need to turn into a child custody battle, as they are commonly referred to these days. Keep an open mind and be hopeful that an amicable child custody solution can be worked out between you and the other parent without a significant struggle or fight. Also, do not be rigid in your plans. If you are only willing to accept the child custody plan you have in mind, with no compromises or sacrifices, you are only setting yourself up for disappointment. Being stubborn about your requests is only going to put the other parent on the defense and make him or her that much more unwilling to work things out with you.
Focus on the child’s or children’s needs. When trying to come up with a child custody plan, put yourself aside for the moment and focus on what is best for your child or children. What brought you and your partner to split up may have been something that hurt you deeply, but this is not the time or the place to get revenge or attempt to get even. You may think you can get him or her back for whatever was done to you by attempting to take all or most of the custody of your children. But once time passes and wounds heal, you will regret using your child or children as pawns.
If appropriate, consider hiring a private investigator. Unfortunately there are circumstances in which parents are not behaving suitably or even more sadly, behaving in neglectful or abusive ways when it comes to the children. A private investigator can look into accusations of neglect and abuse and provide evidence of either infraction if they do in fact exist. Hopefully, you will never find yourself in a situation where your partner is either abusing or neglecting your child or children, but if you do a private investigator can prove to be invaluable in this situation.
