If you’re out on the hills this spring you’ll need to be prepared for the variety of weather we tend to enjoy and the best way to do that is to buy waterproofs. Waterproof jackets come in a range of styles and designs for different purposes and fabric technology has moved on a lot in the last couple of decades so getting hot and sticky in your waterproofs is pretty much a thing of the past as they are made far more breathable material today. Your waterproof jacket will label itself in relation to breathability and its breathability will not affect its waterproofness. When your jacket is advertised as ‘resistant’ it means your jacket will only withstand light rain. Referring to a jacket as a ‘waterproof’ means it has to perform to the British Standard. ‘very waterproof’ means your waterproof jacket will stay waterproof even after it has been used many times, and ‘extremely waterproof’ means your waterproof jacket has a very durable level of waterproofness.
Look out for ventilation options in your waterproof jacket too, such as adjustable cuffs and vents under the arms. There is no such thing as a waterproof zip however. All zips leak so good waterproof jackets have storm flaps inside and outside over and under the zip. Cheap waterproof jackets tend to have no lining and don’t have adjustable hoods, but high performance waterproof jackets feature all types of design features for different uses.
